Pool latch recall – what to do if you have a G8Safe latch

DIY Pool Fence product callback for nationwide hardware chain’s products– G8Safe Pool Latches
If you have begun a DIY Pool Fence job over the last few months, then you may want to check where you got your products from, and if they are part of the latest recall issued by one of Australia’s biggest hardware chains in April 2018. While DIY Frameless glass  and Absolut do not use or stock the recalled products, we wish to share the news so if you have recently set up a G8Safe latch, you can make sure you have it changed as soon as possible.
The product recall is issued for G8Safe Pool Latches created by SafeTech Hardware Australia Pty. As Choice reported,  this is a national recall because the latch does not obey Australian safety standards.
The reason? Because these latches have the capacity to be locked in a manner that the locking pin stays in an open position. This means that it can in fact be ‘locked open’ and consequently anyone can enter the pool area as the latch will certainly not automatically close after you.
As revealed by Choice:

” Consumers should immediately disable the key lock mechanism by removing the key from the striker, or [fill] the key hole with a waterproof adhesive,”

says David Hillyard, commissioner of Consumer Protection.

” This is a very serious safety issue,” Choice adds, “so I urge all owners and residents of properties with pools to … take urgent action.”.

The recall is for a range of the SafeTech and G8Safe items, including:

  • SafeTech Top Pull Pool Gate Latch (Key Lockable).
  • G8Safe Top Pull Pool Gate Latch (Key Lockable).
  • SafeTech TriLatch (Key Lockable).
  • G8Safe TriLatch (Key Lockable).

In addition to the kits:

  • SafeTech Trade Packs (Key Lockable).
  • G8Safe Megapack (Key Lockable).

What to do

The callback is advising that Customers should “immediately disable the key lock mechanism by removing the key from the striker or fill in the key hole with a waterproof adhesive”.
The fact this recall has occured explains clear reasons that we have these pool safety standards, as well as why Absolut and DIY Frameless glass only stocks top quality products which fully follow these standards.
