Toughened Glass Pool fences – What you need to know (Part 2)

PART 2.
Toughened Glass Pool Fences: Part 2 – Breakages and Safety

As you may know, Absolut Custom Glass are well known in The Gold Coast for our Frameless and Semi-Frameless Glass Pool fencing installations – We only install glass because we believe in its appeal, and its safety. But remember, than while the glass is safer, it is not 100% resistant to damages.

Most commonly toughened glass breakages occur because people ignore the sheer weight of the panels. If you contemplate it, modern production techniques allow common panel sizes to be as much as 2 meters in length and 1.2 meters in height. This can rapidly rise to over 70kg per panel!

If you are determined to follow a DIY Pool Fencing path, then Special ‘glass gloves’ should constantly be worn when handling glass to give some additional grip. And it is very important to follow safe lifting techniques when lifting panels.
Whilst breakages of toughened glass is rare they do happen and this is usually from a hard object coming into contact with the edge of the glass. Toughened glass is at its toughest in the middle of the panel and its weak spot is at the edge. This occurs during the tempering process.

If breakage does occur it is essential to remember just how much the panel weighed before it was broken, (Remember, 70kg!) because all that weight will now be on the floor in tiny little cubes of broken glass. Whilst there are no shards from breakages of broken toughened glass, the tiny pieces still have some pointy edges and can cause modest cuts when handling. Always use a thick glove or better yet, glass gloves when tidying up and don’t attempt to use your kitchen dustpan and brush. This will be too lightweight to handle the weight. Ideally use a steel dustpan or a small shovel. And place into a rubbish bin that is tough enough to take the weight. Most recycle centres will not take tempered glass in Australia so for recycling contact your local glass providers to see if there is a centre that is going to take the glass for recycling.
